The Moorside High School Science Department is committed to providing a high-quality science education, setting the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity.
Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils will be able to recognise the power of rational explanation using evidence and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They will understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.
The Moorside High School Science Department aspires to develop students who are skilled critical thinkers, problem solvers, innovators, and team players. We will develop the minds of life-long learners by providing a variety of opportunities that will support the creativity and curiosity of all students. At the conclusion of their school career, our students will be capable of applying their scientific knowledge to contemporary issues, making connections between scientific disciplines, and pursuing post-secondary education or careers in the fields of science and engineering. We will empower them to fulfil their duty as citizens and help them feel more confident in the decisions they may need to make about family, health and nutrition or environmental concerns.
The Science Department is a vibrant and active part of the school, providing opportunities for pupils to participate in clubs, trips and inter-house activities, there is always something exciting going on. Our mission is to provide a dynamic education that prepares our pupils for success at university and beyond, irrespective of their starting point. The Science Team are proactive, motivated, and extremely hard working. Staff are committed to pupils in their classes and work effectively to ensure all students make progress. We have an excellent team of technicians who support the work of the faculty and support students’ science experience.
The Science Faculty continues to look for innovative and improved approaches that they can use in their teaching, learning and assessment to improve lesson delivery and outcomes. For example, using iPad’s with Kahoot and Quizlet which students are particularly excited about; using visualizers in lessons to show demonstrations or how to assess and improve pupil work more effectively.
Our Key Stage 3 Science course is totally unique because we designed it ourselves! The aims of our course are to:
The Science Department runs a very successful Science and Engineering Club, pupils from our feeder schools also participate. As part of the curriculum enhancement activities we arrange visits to the National Space Centre, Chester Zoo, Big Bang Fair (both national and local events).
We also run highly successful events with our feeder schools including a ‘Gases’ morning with Year 5 pupils, as well as exciting ‘Rollercoaster Challenge Days’. We also offer many after-school revision sessions.
