- Geography prepares young people with the knowledge, skills and understanding to make sense of their world and to face the challenges that will shape our societies and environments at the local, national and global scales.’ Dr Rita Gardner
In geography we aim to deliver a curriculum that is broad and balanced in order for students to have the knowledge they need to succeed in life.
Though their study of geography we want:
Our geography curriculum will:
A new KS3 curriculum was introduced in September 2020 that was designed to take students through a story of the Earth. Historically students within the school have struggled to contextualise places outside of their own lived experiences. As a result their understanding of the geography within a place is only superficial which makes place comparison difficult. To this end the new KS3 curriculum has been ordered by place, interleaving themes to give students a deeper understanding of the human and physical geography within an area (city, country or continent).
At the start of year 7 students will look in detail at their own locality of Stoke-on-Trent and how this fits in to the UK. Within the first topic all students will revisit skills which should have been covered at KS2 (previous baseline assessments have shown that these vary between pupils) to provide all students with the same foundations. The curriculum then moves onto the impact of the EU, changes in the Arctic, human and physical interactions in the US before ending in year 7 on environmental issues in Borneo. All of these stories all contain geographical issues which are current and impactful on students’ lives.
Year 8 continue to build on the knowledge, understanding and skills previously learnt. 8 key themes have been chosen which mimic the themes found at GCSE and are evenly split between human and physical geography to make the curriculum both broad and balanced.
We have chosen to teach the OCR B specification as this best fits with the aims and intentions of the department. The aims OCR B specification are for students to build on KS3 in order to:
Throughout the GCSE students will alternate between human and physical topics. Year 9 will also have additional extension lessons to take pupils beyond the specification to discuss and evaluate related issues.
