What is Personal Development?
- Personal Development is what a school offers to pupils beyond their core curriculum of subject content. It is delivered through aspects of the curriculum built into lessons BUT can also be delivered through trips, collapsed timetable days, assemblies, clubs, student leadership, form time, themed weeks and charity events.
- PD includes SMSC opportunities (spiritual, moral, social and cultural development), aspects of citizenship such as developing pupils understanding of British values of democracy, the rule of law, liberty respect and tolerance. It includes learning opportunities which promote equality of opportunity, and diversity, help pupils to understand and respect difference but also to see shared characteristics and to engage with views and beliefs that are different from their own. Ultimately it is the part of the curriculum that builds responsible, respectful, and active citizens who make a positive contribution to society.
- Within the wider life of the school, PD is the opportunity pupils have to access the cultural capital they need to succeed in life beyond MHS. This builds pupils confidence, resilience, and independence and helps to develop strength of character. It enables pupils to discover and explore their talents and interests.
- Aspects of PD develop pupils’ understanding of how to build and maintain their physical and mental wellbeing and healthy relationships. In addition, it is the support they receive to prepare for success beyond MHS and consider their future in education, employment, or training this can include having opportunities to engage with FE and HE institutions as well as training providers and employers.
How the PD Planner works
- Each HT has a REACH value assigned to it. Each dept/faculty has planned at least one activity for the HT which links to the REACH value directly to their subject/s and this will be signposted to pupils via REACH value displayed on PPT slide or icon on any worksheets (this could be a lesson starter or task within a lesson or a homework)
- Each week has a PD theme for assemblies and FT activities and has been assigned to a faculty/dept.
- For the week assigned to faculties/depts ONE FT personal development activity (15 – 20 mins in length) will be planned in addition to ONE ASSEMBLY (15 – 20 mins) to be delivered by faculty members or pupils prepped for this by the faculty suitable for all year groups (or one KS3/one for KS4).
- Where live assemblies cannot take place, materials (for example, a recorded assembly or a PPT with a script) will be provided for FT to deliver in FT in Assembly conditions (silence, facing the front etc.).
- For themed weeks a plan will be collated which states what each subject will deliver to support the theme of the week
- Trips, Personal Development days and other development opportunities are highlighted. These are in addition to the MHS ‘DO’ (Development Opportunities) menu which are run on a weekly basis by staff members during lunchtimes and after school.
Development Opportunities
Our ‘Development Opportunities’ menu with a great variety of clubs is updated termly. Maintaining a healthy work life balance is crucial for students and we are keen for all to access a club and develop their personal interests and passions.
Students can sign up for clubs via Arbor (Parents can do this via the Arbor app) or by contacting the teacher in charge. For instructions on how to sign students up for clubs via Arbor use this link.
Everyone who attends a club will receive House Points so it’s a great way to help your House on its way towards winning the House competition this year.
