Curriculum

The aim of the English Department is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and the written word and to inspire a love of literature. We endeavour to create a climate within our classrooms that enables students to enjoy exploring language and literature and encourages discussion and debate about texts and their authors, and for students to see themselves as authors.

We want our students to be able to read easily and with confidence and to feel able to seek meanings and broaden both their thinking and their vocabulary. We aim for our students to develop an appreciation of their literary and linguistic heritage. The English Department believes that language is power and by equipping our students with the skills, techniques and confidence to write well, this will stand them in good stead throughout life. We aim to give our students a solid foundation on which they can learn across the curriculum.
