One-to-One Devices Scheme
Introduction
Year 7 pupils will have the opportunity to access the Moorside High School ‘One to One Digital Device’ purchase scheme. This scheme enables students to make use of digital learning in the classroom and at home as part of our school vision ‘Engage and Achieve’.
Below is a detailed outline of the programme and a range of ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ covering all of the essential information regarding the scheme.

General FAQs

One device per student.

Yes, the student can use the device to support their learning at home. You are responsible for all usage of the device, and all WIFI/internet access at home by your child.

Yes, it is possible to use this device for personal use, but be advised that accounts and any information captured by our safeguarding tools may be viewed by Moorside High School.
(Please note that the device will always be connected to the Moorside High School network and filtering systems)

Our aims in introducing the 1:1 device scheme are to:
- Improve accessibility to the curriculum for all students
- Promote independent learning, providing access to a wealth of information and resources
- Encourage organisation by helping student to manage their own workload and stay on task
- Offer new possibilities for teaching and learning
- Help to prepare students for the technological demands of the modern workplace

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is not supported as option because of:
- Ease of management when devices are used en masse
- Prevention of security risks
- Software and hardware used across the Trust needs to be consistent
- Every student will have the same capabilities and experience so as to allow for lessons to be planned most effectively

Yes, but only in curriculum areas that rely on it as an integral part of the course, including:
- Business Studies
- ICT
- Computer Science

The school operates this scheme to enable access to technology for all students for a low monthly fee. The school makes no money from running this scheme.

If choosing to pay in full or by Direct Debit, payments will be taken on the same date. Direct Debit options are then paid on the 25th of each month.

We will arrange distribution the start of term (more information will be released closer to the time).

Instructions will be provided on how you should set the device up with your child(ren).

The battery life is enough for a full day at school. We will expect students to come to school with a laptop charged to at least 85%. This is part of their daily equipment expectations at school (and therefore part of our SMART system.)

We strongly recommend that devices are labelled – suitable labels can be purchased from https://www.easy2name.com and can then be attached to the Kensington case and digital inking pen

The expectation is that every Y7 student at MHS should bring a device to use in school and make use of at home. However, there is no requirement to purchase.

At the end of the agreement, when the final payment has been made, the device becomes yours.

Pay any outstanding sum due if you wish to retain the device. If you do not wish to pay the outstanding sum, the device(s) must be returned no later than the last day your child(ren) attend Moorside High School.

You can cancel your order at any point, return your device and stop future payments from leaving your account. However, if the cancellation takes place after the end of the first Half Term (Friday students break up for Autumn half term holiday) the school will not be able to offer a refund of the payments made up to that date.
Repair and Replace Scheme FAQs

The first point of contact is the school.
If the device has a hardware issue it will be sent for repair and loan device will be issued. If there is a software issue, it will usually be wiped back to factory settings, ready for setting up again. During this process, any files not saved on the students OneDrive will also be lost. It is therefore essential that your child saves all of their files on the school OneDrive.

No, there is no limit. However, we ask you to remind your child(ren) to take good care of the equipment you are paying for.

The repair service is designed specifically for student programmes and there is no charge or cap on claims through the repair service.

Yes. Devices are covered anywhere in the world, however collection, repair and return is within the UK mainland only.
Teaching and Learning FAQs

We can assure you pupils will not spend all day looking at the device: Technology is not a replacement for the teacher. Think of the device as a digital textbook or notebook and lessons will continue to include the important interaction between teacher and pupil and between peers (e.g., collaborative teamwork and discussions.)
When planning lessons, teachers will ensure breaks between the use of the devices and other classroom activities – as they do currently.
It’s important to remember that devices will not be used in every subject and your child’s day is broken up with subjects that have no screen time at all (e.g., Physical Education.)
However, we are committed to making full and effective use of technology for learning. Students need to learn about safe, effective, and productive use of technology learning tools.

Devices will be used in the lesson where they support the learning, otherwise they may become a distraction and we do not want students on their device for the whole day. Devices can be used in study area at break and lunch, but otherwise they should be out of sight at these times to afford students a break.

The devices will support us in our move towards paperless work, but will not fully replace books, hard copy notes, essays etc.

We are conscious that there is a fine balance to be found between using the device and the stylus with traditional handwriting using paper and pen.
Since all GCSE examinations require pupils to sit handwritten papers at present, we will use a hybrid system to ensure they maintain their skills.
Staff will use the devices for tasks where appropriate to enhance learning and continue to provide differentiated learning. Devices are an additional medium to complement the teachers’ toolkit for the benefit of the pupils.

Pupils will need to sign and return the Moorside High School One-to-One device agreement and agree to the school’s Acceptable Use Policy.
This is document is currently in development, to be rolled out when the devices are first used in school during the autumn term.
ICT and Safe Usage FAQ’s

Students must store all files on the student’s school issued OneDrive account. This allows other teaching tools to be available for use at the teachers’ discretion, which solely use Microsoft’s OneDrive service.
iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, non-school OneDrive accounts (and other similar services) cannot be accessed in school. Using the school OneDrive also protects against a student losing their work, should a device become damaged, lost, or stolen.

The Microsoft 365 software will be automatically installed on scheme devices (and remains licensed whilst your student is at the school) and any other software required for learning will be automatically added and updated by the school.

Students must store all files on their school OneDrive. This is then backed up automatically to the cloud.

Moorside High School will configure these devices. Using the logon details provided, the laptop will automatically configure itself for use and associate itself with all the software/apps and content, and all MS-Teams that students will need to be ready to work in school.

Smoothwall web filtering will protect the device in school and at home using a cloud-based system so that the internet is monitored and logged.
The device will be safe and filtered anywhere, anytime. This ensures the device is properly safeguarded on and off site. In the event any safeguarding concerns are captured by the device, these will be automatically forwarded to the safeguarding team to review and action if appropriate.

The laptops will be protected by Bitdefender which will automatically monitor the device for potential virus and malware threats, and manage any actions required to protect the laptop automatically.
Any alerts requiring manual intervention will be passed to Moorside High School to action.

The school has a complete and comprehensive GDPR policy and we have carefully examined Microsoft’s cloud offering. As a registered Education provider all of the data held by Microsoft will be held within the EU primary data centres in Ireland with secondary data centres in France and Germany.
Microsoft would in this instance be acting as a processor under GDPR and the transfer of personal data from Microsoft servers in and out of the UK would fall under the Standard Contractual Clauses that cover a processor operating in the EU who was sending personal data outside of the EU.
