Introduction

Year 7 pupils will have the opportunity to access the Moorside High School ‘One to One Digital Device’ purchase scheme. This scheme enables students to make use of digital learning in the classroom and at home as part of our school vision ‘Engage and Achieve’.

Below is a detailed outline of the programme and a range of ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ covering all of the essential information regarding the scheme.

General FAQs

How many devices can I order?
Can my child use the device at home?
Can the device be used for personal use?

Yes, it is possible to use this device for personal use, but be advised that accounts and any information captured by our safeguarding tools may be viewed by Moorside High School.

(Please note that the device will always be connected to the Moorside High School network and filtering systems)
Why am I being encouraged to purchase a device?
Our aims in introducing the 1:1 device scheme are to:

Improve accessibility to the curriculum for all students

Promote independent learning, providing access to a wealth of information and resources

Encourage organisation by helping student to manage their own workload and stay on task

Offer new possibilities for teaching and learning

Help to prepare students for the technological demands of the modern workplace
Why can’t my child bring their own device to school?
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is not supported as option because of:

Ease of management when devices are used en masse

Prevention of security risks

Software and hardware used across the Trust needs to be consistent

Every student will have the same capabilities and experience so as to allow for lessons to be planned most effectively
Will there be other IT access in school?
Yes, but only in curriculum areas that rely on it as an integral part of the course, including:

Business Studies

ICT

Computer Science
Does the school make any money from this scheme?
Will payments be taken straight away?
When will my child receive the device?
How do I set the device up?
How long does the battery last?
Should devices be labelled with names?
Do I have to purchase one of these devices?
What happens at the end of the agreement?
What if my child leaves Moorside High School?
Can I cancel my device order and receive a refund?

You can cancel your order at any point, return your device and stop future payments from leaving your account. However, if the cancellation takes place after the end of the first Half Term (Friday students break up for Autumn half term holiday) the school will not be able to offer a refund of the payments made up to that date.

Repair and Replace Scheme FAQs

What is covered by the repair service?
Any fault – for example:

Laptop stops working

Laptop develops a technical issue

Any accidental damage – for example:

Droppage

Smashed Screen

Spillage of liquid

Broken / damaged ports

Any Theft
How long does the Repair and Replacement cover provided by Freedom Tech last?
What is not covered?
Accessories (e.g. chargers, replacement stylus (cost £36 each from via school)

Malicious damage
How do I access the repair/replacement service?

The first point of contact is the school.

If the device has a hardware issue it will be sent for repair and loan device will be issued. If there is a software issue, it will usually be wiped back to factory settings, ready for setting up again. During this process, any files not saved on the students OneDrive will also be lost. It is therefore essential that your child saves all of their files on the school OneDrive.
What to do if the device gets stolen?

Where it says ‘your enquiry’ put stolen device and add police crime ref number.
Is there a limit to the number of repairs?
Is there any excess or cost for repairs?
How quickly will the device be repaired / replaced?
Any faulty / damaged / stolen device will be replaced with a loan device immediately

Zero downtime for students

Faulty / Damaged devices will be collected, repaired / replaced, and returned within 7-10 working days

Once returned handed back to the student and loan device returned to stock
Can we take the device out of the UK?

Teaching and Learning FAQs

Will my child be having too much screentime in a day?

We can assure you pupils will not spend all day looking at the device: Technology is not a replacement for the teacher. Think of the device as a digital textbook or notebook and lessons will continue to include the important interaction between teacher and pupil and between peers (e.g., collaborative teamwork and discussions.)

When planning lessons, teachers will ensure breaks between the use of the devices and other classroom activities – as they do currently.

It’s important to remember that devices will not be used in every subject and your child’s day is broken up with subjects that have no screen time at all (e.g., Physical Education.)

However, we are committed to making full and effective use of technology for learning. Students need to learn about safe, effective, and productive use of technology learning tools.
Will my child use their device every lesson and at break / lunch time?

No.

Devices will be used in the lesson where they support the learning, otherwise they may become a distraction and we do not want students on their device for the whole day. Devices can be used in study area at break and lunch, but otherwise they should be out of sight at these times to afford students a break.
Will the devices replace workbooks and textbooks?
Will there still be a focus on handwriting?

We are conscious that there is a fine balance to be found between using the device and the stylus with traditional handwriting using paper and pen.

Since all GCSE examinations require pupils to sit handwritten papers at present, we will use a hybrid system to ensure they maintain their skills.

Staff will use the devices for tasks where appropriate to enhance learning and continue to provide differentiated learning. Devices are an additional medium to complement the teachers’ toolkit for the benefit of the pupils.
How will the school manage use / misuse of the devices?

Pupils will need to sign and return the Moorside High School One-to-One device agreement and agree to the school’s Acceptable Use Policy.

This is document is currently in development, to be rolled out when the devices are first used in school during the autumn term.

ICT and Safe Usage FAQ’s

Can my child use something other than their school OneDrive to store their work?

Students must store all files on the student’s school issued OneDrive account. This allows other teaching tools to be available for use at the teachers’ discretion, which solely use Microsoft’s OneDrive service.

iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, non-school OneDrive accounts (and other similar services) cannot be accessed in school. Using the school OneDrive also protects against a student losing their work, should a device become damaged, lost, or stolen.
How does my child connect to the WIFI in school?
Can I install any software on the device?
Is my child’s data backed up on the laptop automatically?
Who prepares/sets-up the devices?

Moorside High School will configure these devices. Using the logon details provided, the laptop will automatically configure itself for use and associate itself with all the software/apps and content, and all MS-Teams that students will need to be ready to work in school.
How does Smoothwall Web Filtering and Safeguarding protect my child?

Smoothwall web filtering will protect the device in school and at home using a cloud-based system so that the internet is monitored and logged.

The device will be safe and filtered anywhere, anytime. This ensures the device is properly safeguarded on and off site. In the event any safeguarding concerns are captured by the device, these will be automatically forwarded to the safeguarding team to review and action if appropriate.
Will there be software installed to protect the device from viruses / malware?
Does the school have GDPR policy for the proposed devices?

The school has a complete and comprehensive GDPR policy and we have carefully examined Microsoft’s cloud offering. As a registered Education provider all of the data held by Microsoft will be held within the EU primary data centres in Ireland with secondary data centres in France and Germany.

Microsoft would in this instance be acting as a processor under GDPR and the transfer of personal data from Microsoft servers in and out of the UK would fall under the Standard Contractual Clauses that cover a processor operating in the EU who was sending personal data outside of the EU.
